Transcending Architecture and Built Environment Frontiers:
A Cross-Cultural Educational Initiative
A British Council Funded Project
The project strengthens UK-Egypt collaboration in architecture and built environment education, addressing global challenges such as sustainability, urbanisation, technology, cultural preservation, resilience, and community engagement.
The TRANSABE-EDU project is a collaboration between Northumbria University (UK) and Galala University (Egypt) The purpose of the project is to develop a teaching and collaboration model alongside a specialised MSc suite to enhance UK and Egyptian qualifications in architecture and the built environment. Galala University plays a pivotal role in this initiative, with plans to concieve cutting-edge MSc and PhD programmes. Objectives include developing an inclusive teaching model aligned with UK and Egyptian qualification frameworks, creating specialised MSc programmes, fostering ongoing collaboration, integrating virtual learning, and designing a sustainable partnership model.
Using a four-phase methodology, the team (1) benchmarked international best practices in transdisciplinary and TNE models; (2) hosted dual-country workshops and surveys to define stakeholder needs; (3) conducted online curriculum-mapping to align UK and Egyptian qualification frameworks, articulate core competencies, sequence modules, and set learning outcomes and assessment rubrics; and (4) synthesised findings into detailed recommendations on module design, delivery formats, assessment strategies, and admissions pathways, disseminated via a comprehensive report, an online platform, and joint seminars.
Key outcomes include establishing a scalable proof-of-concept for deep UK–non-UK partnership with shared quality assurance and blended delivery; building Galala’s capacity in transdisciplinary curriculum design, digital integration, and international accreditation; and expanding Northumbria’s global reach through new modules, joint research, and access to Middle Eastern fieldwork, collectively setting a new benchmark for transnational, transdisciplinary education in architecture and built environment.
